Power, Politics and Etiquette in Organizations

Power is needed to reach objectives in all organizations, and power affects performance. Like power, politics is important to organizational performance. People who use organizational politics tend to use different behavior than those who do not. And people using proper etiquette behave differently than those who don’t, and unethical etiquette behavior hurts human relations, and performance.  All-in-all power and political behavior can be either ethical and unethical.  Ethical power and politics includes behavior that benefits both the individual and the organization.

  1. Power is needed to materialise objectives, yes power affects performance, however power drivers people for bad politics so giving power to employees needs to do with a very good understanding.

    1. Yes Thilina. It is correct. Power problems are the effects of personality on structure, the solutions demand thinking which is free from the disabilities of emotional conflicts (Zaleznik, 1970).

  2. Thank you Chandana brining up good topic. The earliest definition of politics was offered by Lasswell, who described it as who gets what, when, and how. one can see that politics involves the resolution of differing preferences in conflicts through the allocation of scarce and valued resources.

  3. An organization is subject to pressures for change from many more sources than can be discussed. Furthermore, it is difficult to predict what types of pressures for change will be most important in the next decade because the complexity of events and the speed of change are increasing.

  4. Nice & important topic by the way. Groups or organizations use power and politics to control their members, maintain and preserve themselves. Power and politics are integrated processes that have to be managed and used effectively in order to achieve individual and organizational cohesion and ventilate their differences.
